spectacled bear

The only bear native to the S hemisphere (Tremarctos ornatus); inhabits forests in W foothills of the Andes; small (shoulder height, 75 cm/30 in); dark with pale rings around eyes; builds platforms in trees from broken branches; eats mainly plants; also known as Andean bear.
