stickleback

Small marine or freshwater fish of the family Gasterosteidae (5 genera), common throughout the N hemisphere; body typically elongate with a number of strong dorsal spines; mouth small and protruding; male builds nest, and guards developing eggs; includes the familiar and ubiquitous 3-spine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), found in streams and lakes as well as shallow marine habitats; length up to 6 cm/2½ in.
