strain

The fractional change in the dimensions of some object subjected to stress, expressed as a number. For force acting along the axis of a rod, linear strain is the change in length divided by the original length. Volume strain is the fractional change in volume for an object pressured on all sides. Shear strain measures the effectiveness of a twisting force.
