aurochs

An extinct large wild ox (Bos primigenius), formerly widespread in Europe, Asia, and N Africa; the ancestor of domestic cattle; bulls large with long forward-pointing horns; females smaller with shorter horns; last individual killed in Poland in 1627; also known as urus, or wild ox; name formerly used for the European bison.
