French poet, novelist, and playwright, born in Fez, N Morocco. His work focuses on the problems of stateless emigrants, as in the novels Harrouda (1973) and Moha le fou, Moha le sage (1978), and in the essays Les Amandiers sont morts de leurs blessures (1976) and L'Ecrivain public (1981). Collections of poetry include Hommes sous linceul de silence (1971), Cicatrices de soleil (1972), Le Discours de chameau (1974), and Grains de peau (1975). A play, Chronique d'une solitude (1976), was staged at the Avignon Festival. He won the 2004 IMPAC Dublin Literary Award for This Blinding Absence of Light (2002).
In 2004 he was awarded the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award for This Blinding Absence of Light (translated from the French by Linda Coverdale).In September 2006, Tahar Ben Jelloun was awarded a special prize for "peace and friendship between peoples" at Lazio between Europe and the Mediterranean Festival.
