First emperor of the Song (Sung) dynasty in China, born into a Beijing military family. He became a general, then reunified China after the post-Tang disintegration (after 907), having been put on the throne by the palace guard (960). Leaving the N under the Khitan Liao dynasty (9071119) he defeated each S state in succession, and reasserted control of Annam. He treated defeated warlords leniently, subdued military political influence, retired army commanders to country estates, and directed power into civilian administration.
