Tamil

A Dravidian-speaking people of S India and Sri Lanka, living as traders and seafarers. Predominantly Hindu, they were instrumental in diffusing Indian culture to many parts of SE Asia in the 11th-c. Many migrated in the 19th-c as labourers to Fiji, West Indies, Mauritius, South Africa, and SE Asia. Tamil is now the major Dravidian language of S India, with written records dating from the 3rd-c BC.
