Theodore (Martin) Hesburgh - External links and references

Clergyman and university president, born in Syracuse, New York, USA. An ordained Roman Catholic priest, he became indelibly identified with Notre Dame University, where he was president (1952–87) in a term that secularized and integrated the university and brought the athletic department under administrative control. He was a charter member of the Civil Rights Commission (1957–72).

May 25, 1917 at Syracuse, New York),a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, is President Emeritus of the University of Notre Dame. He graduated from The Catholic University of America in 1945 having earned a Doctorate in Sacred Theology.

Hesburgh served as a member of the United States Civil Rights Commission from 1957, and Chairman from 1969, until his dismissal by President Nixon in 1972. Hesburgh was a major figure in US politics and the Roman Catholic Church from the 1950s to the 1990s, and he is still influential today.
