tiger

A member of the cat family (Panthera tigris) native to S and SE Asia; reddish-brown with dark vertical stripes (occasional individuals almost white with pale stripes and blue eyes); inhabits diverse habitats, often near water; swims well; hunts by sight and sound; eats mainly large mammals; several subspecies: Bengal, Indochinese, Chinese, Sumatran, Siberian (the largest known cat), and possibly extinct Caspian, Bali, and Javan tigers.
