trio (ensemble)

An ensemble of three singers or instrumentalists, or a piece of music for such an ensemble. The string trio is normally composed of violin, viola, and cello; in the piano trio, a piano replaces the viola. Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven are among those who wrote for both these ensembles.
