Italian politician and prime minister (18623, 1867), born in Alessandria, Piedmont, N Italy. A deputy of the left in 1848, he opposed d'Azeglio. As minister of justice he proposed the confiscation of religious bodies' properties which provoked the Calabiana crisis in 1855. He was interior minister in the Lamarmora cabinet (1859) and organized the plebiscites for annexation to Piedmont. Elected prime minister in 1862, he resigned after the Aspromonte clash in 1863.
