Walter Lowrie
Protestant administrator and US senator, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. He emigrated to Pennsylvania with his family in 1792, and taught at a school in Butler, PA. He entered local politics, holding several small offices before winning election to the US Senate, and spoke out against slavery during his single Senate term (Democrat, 181925). In 182536 he was secretary of the Senate, after which he directed the activities of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church. Three of his sons became foreign missionaries.
Walter Lowrie (December 10, 1784–December 14, 1868) was a teacher, farmer, and politician from Butler County, Pennsylvania. He served in both houses in the state legislature and represented Pennsylvania in the United States Senate.
After his term as a Senator, Lowrie stayed on as Secretary of the Senate for eleven years. Lowrie, later served as chief justice of Pennsylvania's Supreme Court.
Lowrie died in New York City in 1868 and is interred in the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan.
