Town in W Germany; 70 km/43 mi S of Brunswick; well-preserved old town with mediaeval centre (listed monument); 12th-c Romanesque castle overlooks the town and was the residential palace of the earls of Stolberg until 1945; birthplace of Otmar Alt and Martin Klaproth.
