whip scorpion

A nocturnal, predatory arthropod; body scorpion-like, up to 75 mm/3 in long, ending in a long whip-like tail; feeds on insects and small amphibians; usually found under stones and bark in the tropics and subtropics. (Class: Arachnida. Order: Uropygi, c.85 species.)

There are three orders of whip scorpions in the class Arachnida:

Amblypygi - tailless whip scorpions Palpigradi - micro whip scorpions (less than 3 mm) Uropygi - whip scorpions

In addition, members of the Schizomida are also sometimes called "micro whip scorpions".
