William (of The Netherlands) III

King of The Netherlands (1849–90), born in Brussels, Belgium, the eldest son of William II. He married his cousin Sophia of Wurtemberg, by whom he had three sons, all of whom predeceased him. He disliked the 1848 Constitution and favoured personal rule, so that he was generally at odds with Thorbecke. He lived mostly at Het Loo, separated from his wife, and on her death in 1877 married Emma of Waldeck-Pyrmont, by whom he had one daughter, the future Queen Wilhelmina. He had the reputation of being tactless, autocratic, and unreasonable, constantly quarrelling with his ministers and with his own sons.
