Bartolommeo Vivarini

Painter, born in Venice, NE Italy, the brother of Antonio Vivarini. He was taught by his brother, but was also strongly influenced by the work of Francesco Squarcione. Among his works are several altarpieces in churches of Venice.

He learned oil painting from Antonello da Messina, and is said to have produced, in 1473, the first oil picture done in Venice.

Most of his works, however, including one in the National Gallery, are in tempera. As "vivarino" means in Italian a goldfinch, he sometimes drew a goldfinch as the signature of his pictures.
