The number on which a system of counting is constructed (number-base). The numbers in common use are in base ten, which uses ten symbols 09, and expresses numbers in multiples of powers of ten; thus three hundred and forty-two is written 342, since it is 3 × 102 + 4 × 10 + 2. A number in base five, which uses five symbols 04, would be written as the sum of multiples of powers of five; thus seventy-three (in base ten) is 2 × 25 + 4 × 5 + 3 = 2 × 52 + 4 × 5 + 3 = 243five: other than base ten, base two is the commonest base.
