Marine and brackish-water fish (Dicentrarchus labrax) found in the surf zone around rocks and beaches of the NE Atlantic; body blue-grey with silver sides, length up to 1 m/3¼ ft; valuable commercial and sport fish. (Family: Serranidae.) The name is also used for other species of the families Serranidae and Centrarchidae.
