Former British politician, now Vice-Chancellor of Waikato University, New Zealand, born in New Zealand. He studied at Auckland University and Oxford, joined the British diplomatic service, but left to teach at Worcester College, Oxford (196874). He entered the House of Commons as a Labour MP in 1974, lost his seat in the 1979 general election, but returned in 1983, having spent the intervening four years as a television journalist. His rise in the Labour Party was rapid, and in 1986 he was elected to the shadow Cabinet, but resigned in 1992 (as a leading Eurosceptic) over the Party's policy on Europe. He was defeated in a bid for the Party leadership in 1992.
Bryan Charles Gould CNZM (born February 11, 1939) is a former politician in the United Kingdom, but was born in New Zealand.
He was a member of Neil Kinnock's Shadow Cabinet, but was defeated in the Labour leadership election which took place after the 1992 election to succeed Kinnock.
He was a Rhodes Scholar, attending Balliol College, Oxford, and subsequently a tutorial Fellow in law at Worcester College.
In July 1994 he took on the role of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Waikato in New Zealand.
He was awarded Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2003 for services to Education.
