cardinal (ornithology)

Either of two species of bird of genus Cardinalis, native to the Americas: the red or northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), and the vermilion cardinal (Cardinalis phoeniceus); males bright red. The name is sometimes used for other (unrelated) red birds. (Family: Emberizidae.)
