Actor, born in Lattimer Mines, Pennsylvania, USA. The son of Ukrainian immigrants, he worked at a number of jobs, including professional boxer, before service in the US Army Air Corps during World War 2. He later entered Stanford University and graduated with a drama degree in 1947. After parts in a number of Broadway productions, he made his film debut in Panic in the Streets (1950). Success followed with Sudden Fear (1953), opposite Joan Crawford, for which he received an Oscar nomination, and his performance as a villainous gunfighter in the Western Shane (1954) gained him a second nomination. Other notable films included Halls of Montezuma (1950), Man in the Attic (1953), Sign of the Pagan (1954), Attack (1956), The Professionals (1966), and Young Guns (1988). He finally won an Oscar for his supporting role in the comedy City Slickers (1991). Television work included his Emmy award-winning performance as a prize-fighter in Requiem for a Heavyweight in 1956.
