A(lfred) N(ewton) Richards

Pharmacologist, born in Stamford, New York, USA. He taught at Columbia (1904–8) and Northwestern (1908–10) Universities before settling at the University of Pennsylvania (1910–46). In World War 2 he chaired the Committee on Medical Research, which made penicillin available for widespread use.
