Painter and photographer, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He studied at the School of Industrial Art, Philadelphia, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. From 1912 he worked as an industrial photographer, moving towards creative industrial records, and in 1927 was commissioned to record the building of the Ford Motor installation at River Rouge, MI (1927). Widely acclaimed for this, he became staff photographer at the New York Museum of Modern Art (19425), but came to regard photography as a basis for his abstract-realistic paintings and graphic work.
