Ecologist, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK. He studied at Liverpool College, and New College, Oxford, where he spent most of his career (193667). He was one of the first to carry out scientific studies of animals in their natural environment, and his book Animal Ecology (1927) is considered to have established the basic principles of modern animal ecology. He is recognized as having done more than anyone else to explain the complex inter-relationships of different animal communities, and their effect on their habitat.
Charles Sutherland Elton (March 29, 1900 - May 1, 1991) was an English biologist.
British ecologist, a pioneer of the study of animal and plant forms in their natural environments, and of animal behaviour as part of the complex pattern of life. Elton carried out a 20-year research project of interrelationships of animals in meadows, woods, and water near Oxford.
He was the son of the literary scholar Oliver Elton and children's writer Letitia Maynard Elton (née MacColl).
