Charles (of France) VIII

King of France (1483–98), born in Amboise, France, the son of Louis XI and Charlotte of Savoy. His sister Anne served as regent (1483–91) until he began to rule in his own right. Through his marriage to Anne of Brittany (1491) the province became united to France. The chief event of his reign was his invasion of Italy (1494) and the brief occupation of Naples (1495), but the states of Italy united to defeat him and he fled back to France. The history of his reign was recorded by his contemporary, Philippe de Comines.
