Charon (astronomy)

Pluto's only known satellite, discovered photographically in 1978 by James W Christy and Robert S Harrington at the US Naval Observatory in Washington, DC. Its distance from Pluto is 19 600 km/12 200 mi; diameter 1200 km/745 mi. It is unusually large, relative to its planet, and has a surface of mainly water ice. Charon was upgraded to dwarf planet (or pluton) status in 2006. Dwarf planets take more than 200 years to orbit the Sun.
