Chinese exclusion

(1882–1943) A US immigration policy in the late 19th-c, growing out of strong anti-Chinese sentiment on the West Coast. The act of 1882 banned the importation of Chinese labourers for a period of ten years. In 1902 the exclusion was made permanent, and the same act prohibited the immigration of Chinese from Hawaii and the Philippines. In 1885 an act of Congress prohibited the entrance of all labourers under contract.
