Fish of European streams and rivers (Leuciscus cephalus), also found in lakes and in the Baltic Sea; body elongate, rather cylindrical, length up to 60 cm/2 ft; greenish-grey above, sides silver, underside white; popular as fine sport fish; a relative of orfe and dace; in the USA the term is used for a type of minnow.
