CID

An abbreviation of Criminal Investigation Department, formed in 1878 as a branch of the London Metropolitan Police, and responsible for the investigation and prevention of crime and the gathering of criminal intelligence. From its inception, the officers in the CID have operated as detectives and do not wear uniform. The CID of the Metropolitan Police is based at New Scotland Yard, and may assist other forces, but most provincial forces in Scotland, England, and Wales now have their own CIDs.
