An administrative division of the judicial system of England and Wales. Each circuit has a circuit administrator and two presiding judges, one senior, one junior. It is based upon the traditional regional groupings adopted by the bar, and consists of the South-Eastern, Western, Midland and Oxford, Welsh, Northern, and North Eastern circuits. In the USA, federal and state judicial systems have similar administrative divisions, also known as circuits. In Scotland, the High Court of Justiciary operates in three circuits when it is dealing with trials outside Edinburgh.
