City in Spain, in Castilla-La Mancha, capital of the province and administrative area of the same name; SW of La Mancha; agricultural city, centre of a wine and olive growing area; market for the Campo de Calatrava; industry limited to food, construction, and, to a minor extent, metallurgy and timber; railway; episcopal see.

Ciudad Real (Spanish for: Royal City) is a city in Castile-La Mancha, Spain.

The city was founded by King Alfonso X in the 13th century to fight against the Military Order of Calatrava.

Its population is 65,048 (as of 2002), about an eighth of the population of the province.

It has a stop on the AVE high-speed rail line and has begun to grow as a long-distance commuter suburb of Madrid.
