A cavy-like rodent (Myocastor coypus), native to South America (introduced elsewhere); large (length over 1 m/3¼ ft); rat-like with broad blunt muzzle; inhabits wetlands; burrows may damage dykes, etc; farmed for soft underfur; also known as nutria. (Family: Myocastoridae.)
