Dan Flavin

Artist, born in New York City, USA. He attended the US Air Force Meteorological Technician Training School, Maryland University, and the New York School of Social Research, but had no art education. He was known for his ‘electric light icons’, constructed from fluorescent tubes, sometimes referred to as ‘Luminism’.

Dan Flavin (April 1, 1933 – November 29, 1996) was an American minimalist sculptor who created sculptural objects and installations from commercially available fluorescent light fixtures. Flavin studied art history for a short time at the New School for Social Research, and drawing and painting at Columbia University. Flavin married artist Tracy Harris, at the Guggenheim Museum, in 1992.

There is a small museum dedicated to Flavin's work in Bridgehampton, New York.
