action

In mechanics, the difference between kinetic energy K and potential energy V (K?V), summed over time; symbol I or S, units J.s (joule.second). Formally, action is the sum over time of the lagrangian. It is crucial to the least-action formulation of mechanics, and to the path-integral formulation of quantum theory.
