delta - Abbreviations, People, Places

A fan-shaped body of alluvium enclosed within the bifurcating channels at the mouth of a river. It is formed when a river deposits sediment as its speed decreases, and the coastal processes of erosion are not sufficiently strong to carry the material away. Deltas may take many forms, depending on the environmental factors at the river mouth, but in all cases the coarse sediment is deposited first, with progressively finer material carried further out from the shore. Deltas may form large fertile plains, but are subject to frequent flooding. Among the largest deltas are those of the Nile, the Ganges–Brahmaputra and the Mississippi rivers.
