County of C England, UK; rises to The Peak at 636 m/2086 ft; drained by Derwent, Dove, Wye, and Trent Rivers; county town, Matlock; chief towns include Derby (new unitary authority from 1997), Chesterfield, Glossop; the Derwent Valley Mills is a world heritage site; sheep and dairy farming, coal, textiles, iron smelting, engineering.

In 1974 the former area of Tintwistle Rural District was incorporated into the new non-metropolitan county of Derbyshire having previously been part of the administrative county of Cheshire.
