Ship builder, born in Shelbourne, Nova Scotia, Canada. Apprenticed in New York, he moved to Newburyport, MA and began to build ships. In 1845 he moved his yard to Boston, where he produced clipper ships for the China trade and other purposes. Several of his clippers held the world record for speed under sail. He built naval vessels during the Civil War.

Champion of the Seas Flying Cloud Glory of the Seas Great Republic Lightning Sovereign of the Seas, named after HMS Sovereign of the Seas.During the American Civil War he was contracted by the US Navy to build the USS Nausett, one of the few Casco-class monitors to be commissioned.
He was part of the Flying Cloud - 89 days from New York To San Francisco.
