The term used in The Netherlands after World War 2 for the proposed breaking down of the distinction between the confessional and non-confessional political parties. The idea was to replace them with a progressive/conservative system. The breakthrough movement aimed to put an end to the state of affairs created by A Kuyper known as the antithesis. The opposition of the confessional parties was too strong for the idea to take hold, but one result was the founding of the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA, Labour), from a merger of the Socialist Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij (SDAP, socialist) with the humanist Vrijzinnig Democratische Bond (VDB) and the Protestant CDU (Christen Democraten Unie). Its sphere of influence appears to have spread gradually in the 1960s into a tendency to deconfessionalization within the confessional parties.
