Mathematician, born in Paris, France. He studied at the Collège Mazarin, became professor of mathematics at the Ecole Militaire (177580), a member of the Académie des Sciences (1783), and professor at the Ecole Normale (1795). He made major contributions to number theory and elliptical functions, but due to the jealousy of his colleague Laplace, he received little recognition or reward for his work.
