Equal Opportunities Commission

A body set up in England and Wales under the Sex Discrimination Act (1975) to work towards the elimination of discrimination on the grounds of sex or marital status and to promote equality of opportunity between men and women generally. The Commission also reviews the working of the Sex Discrimination Acts and Equal Pay Act (1970). It consists of between 8 and 15 commissioners.

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) is an independent non-departmental public body, (NDPB) or quango, in the United Kingdom. Its task is to enforce, through court action if necessary, the various gender equality legislation that exists in the UK. Due to the ability of the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly to vary the law in this area, separate EOC sub-agencies exist for Scotland and Wales .
