The state of a system in which opposing forces are balanced, so that there is no tendency to change. The term is used in economics in a variety of ways. In microeconomics, equilibrium is used to describe a situation where supply and demand for a good are equal, price being adjusted to bring this about. In macroeconomics equilibrium describes a situation where aggregate supply and demand are equal, the level of real activity being adjusted to bring this about. In game theory, an equilibrium strategy is a rule for choosing actions which seems best to any one agent, given that agent's beliefs about the rules being followed by other agents. In each case equilibrium may not be satisfactory, but will tend not to change unless circumstances alter.
