Actress, born in Cork, Co Cork, S Ireland. After studying philosophy at University College, Cork, she trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating with the Bancroft Gold Medal. Throughout her career she has worked consistently with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Productions here include As You Like It (1985), Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1985), Much Ado About Nothing (1986), and The Merchant of Venice (1986). Other theatre work includes Mary Stuart (1988), Machinal (1993), and The Prime of Miss Jean Brody (1998). She often collaborates with the director Deborah Warner (earning them the nickname the Terrible Twins) most notably with Richard II (1995), in which she played the title role, which provoked both enormous criticism and rapturous praise. Film work includes My Left Foot (1988), London Kills Me (1991), Three Men and a Little Lady (1996), Butcher Boy (1996), The Last September (1999), and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). She is considered one of Britain's most controversial and exhilarating performers.
Fiona Shaw, CBE (Hon) (christened Fiona Mary Wilson, born 10 July 1958 in County Cork, Republic of Ireland) is a leading Irish stage actress who regularly appears in London theatre.
Other notable theatrical roles include Celia in As You Like It (1984), Madame de Volanges in Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1985), Katherine in The Taming of the Shrew (1987), and the title roles in Electra (1988), The Good Person of Sechuan (1989), Hedda Gabler (1991), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1998) and Medea (2000).
She controversially played the lead in Richard II, directed by Deborah Warner in 1995.
Shaw has also worked in film and television, including My Left Foot, Jane Eyre, Persuasion, Gormenghast, and the Harry Potter films (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), in which she plays the insufferable Aunt Petunia .
