Akan

A cluster of Twi (Kwa)-speaking peoples mostly in Ghana, and in the Côte d'Ivoire and Togo, comprising several kingdoms. The best known and largest is the Asante (Ashanti). All recognize matrilineal descent, and have a long urban and trading tradition. Population c.5 million.
