Frank Steunenberg - Governor, Assassination and Trial

US governor, born in Keokuk, Iowa, USA. A typesetter, he bought the Caldwell Tribune (1866) with his brother, later serving in the Idaho legislature. As Democratic governor of Idaho (1897–1901), he called in the federal authorities to put down the Western Federation of Miners strike (1899). Returning to publishing, he was killed by a bomb outside his home, placed there by a union member.

Frank Steunenberg (born August 8, 1861 in Keokuk, Iowa – died December 30, 1905 in Caldwell, Idaho) was the fourth Governor of the State of Idaho, serving from 1897 until 1901.

Governor

With labor union support, in 1896 Steunenberg was nominated as both the Democratic and Populist candidate for governor.

Assassination and Trial

On December 30, 1905, Steunenberg was killed outside his house in Caldwell by a bomb rigged to his front gate. Stevenson
