Frans Andriessen

Dutch Catholic politician, born in Utrecht, W Netherlands. A member of Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP), he supported co-operation with the other confessional parties in the Christen-Democratisch Appèl (CDA) and had a special interest in housing. He served as minister of finance (1980), member of the European Commission in Brussels (1981–92), minister of agriculture and fisheries (1985), and after 1989 minister for foreign affairs; he was also vice-president of the Commission. In 1990 he was appointed professor of European Integration in Utrecht.
