fusion

A development of jazz that started in the late 1960s, when jazz artists sought to revitalize the music by drawing on elements from other musical traditions, and particularly rock, soul, and dance music. Miles Davis's albums In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew (both 1969) were major influences on the genre, followed by ex-Davis musicians in the bands Weather Report, Chick Corea's Return To Forever, and John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, which themselves spawned further groups. At the same time, rock groups like Soft Machine, Chicago, and King Crimson were looking to jazz for fresh inspiration. The term is also used for other blendings of music genres, such as rock and folk, or jazz and classics.
