Film director, born in Raudnitz, NWC Czech Republic (formerly Raudnice, Bohemia). He began directing in 1923, and his darkly realistic, almost documentary style was acclaimed in Die Liebe der Jeanne Ney (1927, The Love of Jeanne Ney). Other works include his pacifist Westfront 1918 (1930) and his great co-production with France, Kameradschaft (1931, Comradeship), all examples of the New Realism. The left-wing stance he took in Die Dreigroschenoper (1931, The Threepenny Opera), from the stage production by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, contributed to his work being banned by the Nazis after they came to power in 1933. Between 1933 and 1941 Pabst worked in France and the USA. In 1941 he moved to Vienna, where his last two films were released: Der Letzte Akt (The Last Ten Days of Adolf Hitler) and Es Geschah am 20 Juli (Jackboot Mutiny), which depicts the attempts made by Claus von Stauffenberg to assassinate Hitler.
Georg Wilhelm Pabst (August 25, 1885 - May 29, 1967) was a film director.
Some of his most famous films concern the plight of women in German society, including Joyless Street (1925) with Greta Garbo and Asta Nielsen, The Loves of Jeanne Ney (1927) with Brigitte Helm, Pandora's Box (1928), and Diary of a Lost Girl (1929), the last two starring American actress Louise Brooks. After the coming of sound he made a trilogy of films that secured his reputation Westfront 1918 (1930), The Threepenny Opera (1931) (based on the Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill musical), and Kameradschaft (1931).
After making A Modern Hero (1934) in the U.S. and Mademoiselle Docteur (1936) in France, Pabst returned to Austria and Germany in 1938, he later claimed, to take care of family business.
