Gabriele Wohmann
Writer, born in Darmstadt, WC Germany. A member of the Gruppe 47, she studied modern languages and music and became a teacher. Literary influences on her prolific writing have included Marcel Proust and James Joyce, and she is an exponent of a counter-movement to political literature. Her major works, Jetzt und nie (1958), Abschied für länger (1965), and Paulinchen war allein zu Haus (1974), are characterized by her fascination with lack of communication and abnormal behaviour. She has also written poetry, short stories, and plays for radio and television.
Guyots were first identified by Harry Hess who collected data using echo-sounding equipment on a ship he commanded during World War II. Calling these guyots (after the 19th century geographer Arnold Henry Guyot) Hess postulated they were once volcanic islands that were beheaded by wave action yet they are now deep under sea level.
