She studied at the University of Sussex, and entered publishing in 1975, first joining Grisewood & Dempsey, then moving to Robert Nicholson Publications (1976) and the Hamlyn Group (1978). Appointed publishing director at Century Publishing in 1982, she stayed with the company when it became Century Hutchinson (1985) and also when this was taken over by Random House (1989), and in 1991 became chair and chief executive of Random House UK.
