Anglican churchman, born in London, UK. He studied at Cambridge, where he rowed in the first university boat race (1829). In 1841 he was consecrated the first (and only) Bishop of New Zealand and Melanesia, and was largely responsible for the organization of the Church of New Zealand. Returning to England, he was appointed Bishop of Lichfield (1867), and initiated the first diocesan conference at which the laity were duly represented (1868). Selwyn College, Cambridge, was founded in his memory (1882).
He was Bishop of New Zealand from 1841 to 1858, Primate of New Zealand from 1858 to 1868 and Bishop of Lichfield from 1868 to 1878.
Selwyn was educated at Eton College and St John's College, Cambridge.
